turnover

The first step in preparing your timeline for turnover is to flatten all of your cuts to the lowest amount of tracks possible. All of your original camera footage should be compressed to track V1 and any shots with optical effects can be put on track V2 and V3. If there are no opticals, you can leave V2 and V3 empty. Remove all footage from nested sequences, if any exist. Any effects in nested sequences will be rebuilt in the conform. If there are any VFX shots, you can put those on track V4. And finally, any titles or graphics can be put on track V5. If there are any titles or graphics that were made in your NLE, please export those as either PNG still images or a ProRes 4444 + Alpha channel and include them in your timeline. Once your timeline is prepared, you can export an EDL for each active track in your timeline along with an AAF from Avid or an XML if you are editing in Premiere. You can include those files on the shuttle drive that you send.

Example timeline. All drama compressed to track V1, opticals placed on track V2 and V3, VFX shots placed on track V4, and titles placed on track V5.

Second, please export a low resolution confidence check from your NLE for reference to confirm that the edit conforms properly. This can be a ProRes 422 LT, DNxHR LB, H.264 or an equivalent proxy codec. Also please burn in source timecode and clip name to the export.

Note: Please be sure to burn in source timecode to the confidence check, not record timecode. The timecode burn in should match the source clip’s timecode, not the timecode of the current place in the timeline.

Example of confidence check export with clip filename and source timecode burn-ins.

Once all the turnover materials are created, please put them in a folder on the media shuttle titled "TURNOVER". Then, place all the camera original files into a folder called "MEDIA" and within that folder, organize footage based on camera (one folder for A CAM, one folder for B CAM, etc.). All audio can be placed in a folder called "AUDIO".  In case there are any issues with conforming the timeline, please also include your project file from your NLE on the media shuttle.

Thank you!
